Spotlight on Dr. Macdonald:

How did you first decide to become a dentist?

My grandfather was a dentist and I remember him drawing pictures of teeth on his napkin at dinner. This memory came in handy when I was a teenager. As I got to high school my mom began to regularly have the dreaded “life goals” and “future career” talks with me. To avoid these conversations, I would tell her that I was interested in dentistry knowing that this answer would be satisfactory and quickly end these conversations. Little did I know that as I came to know more about the profession that I genuinely found it intriguing. Isn’t irony a funny thing?!

How did you get your kids excited about brushing?

I try to make it interactive and fun. If they feel they are part of the process, they will be less likely to fight the brushing. Sitting in front of them, I have my children brush my teeth. They laugh and think it is funny. Afterwards, it is my turn. When I am done I let them brush their own teeth. I do the same thing with flossing. Consistency is key!

Do you have a sweet tooth? If so, what’s your favorite sweet?

Aww yeah! I love Snickers. It has it all! Nougat, caramel, peanuts, chocolate. It is the supreme pizza of candy bars. I also like cakes, and brownies, and cookies… I had better stop now.

What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?

That’s a tough one. I’d have to say April 25th, because it’s not too hot, not too cold. All you need is a light jacket. Can anyone name this movie quote?!

In all seriousness, probably 8:40am EST, Friday’s are the best, June is warm, light and summer is just starting!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

The sixth member of Backstreet Boys… if they are ever looking for a middle-aged, tone-deaf, chubby member

What did you do growing up that got you in trouble?

I used to stand on my bunk bed and scrape off the popcorn ceiling in my bedroom.
